The Relevance of the Spanish Origin Conference

The 15th Spanish Origin Conference, held this year in Alicante with the Vinalopó Embolsada Uva PDO as host, was a significant event for the Mahón-Menorca Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). At these conferences, PDOs from across Spain come together to share experiences, defend the authenticity of local products, and bolster their promotion.

In 2013, the Mahón-Menorca PDO hosted these conferences on our beloved island, reaffirming our commitment to the protection of Menorcan products. Since then, we have continued working to ensure that Mahón-Menorca cheese maintains its quality and authenticity, not only within Menorca but across the world.

The Importance of PDOs

Protected Designations of Origin (PDOs) are crucial for safeguarding local products throughout Spain. Each PDO embodies the essence of a region, ensuring that traditional methods and authentic flavours are preserved. The Mahón-Menorca PDO not only protects our cheese but also preserves the cultural and natural heritage of Menorca.

The conference highlighted the importance of promoting and protecting these products in a globalised market. Each PDO, including that of our cheese, ensures that consumers can enjoy products with authentic origin and guaranteed quality.

The Role of the Mahón-Menorca PDO

The Mahón-Menorca PDO plays a pivotal role in promoting cheese produced on the island, ensuring that traditional methods are upheld. The curing of cheeses, the feeding of livestock on local pastures, and the preservation of the Menorcan landscape are fundamental aspects defended by our PDO. These unique characteristics make Mahón-Menorca cheese more than just a food: it is a part of Menorca’s history and culture.

Looking to the Future

Participating in the Jornadas de Origen España allows us to continue advocating for the recognition of local products. These events are essential for exchanging ideas, addressing shared challenges, and strengthening the role of PDOs in the rural and sustainable economy of our country.
